L'Appel du Vide (for orchestra)

"L'Appel du Vide" is a French phrase referring to the desire to leap from a ledge, jerk a steering wheel into oncoming traffic. Translated literally, it means "the call of the void," but rather than referring to suicidal tendencies, the sensation is the sudden urge to do something unpredictable, to follow the sudden flash-forward that our minds conjure. My work expresses this unique sensation; the tension of riding on the razor's edge of a impulsive decision. It is also an embracing of the true fragility of life, and the anxiety that causes. After all, the veil between life and death is, often, nothing more than impulse control.
